The central topic of LMSM is bacterial adaptation. The remarkable evolutionary success of bacteria is due to their capacity of detecting physical (temperature, osmotic pressure, …) and chemical signals (nutriments, bacterial communication factors, signals from eukaryotic organisms or host) present in their environment and to develop an optimal adaptative response. Modifications affect both the microorganisms and their environment. In the human body, that contains more than 1 kg bacteria, the commensal microflora can be considered as a specific organ. The LMSM investigates this question by studying bacterial sensor systems involved in the detection of environmental signals and effectors responsible for bacterial dominance and virulence. These studies are realized using human (intestine, skin or lung) and vegetal (rhizosphere) models. A main topic concerns the role of bacteria in the intestine-skin-brain triangle and the interactions between eukaryote hormones and bacteria (Microbial Endocrinology). The bacterial response to aerial pollutants and sub-lethal stress is also investigated. These studies are leading to the definition of new antibacterial molecules, phytoprotection strategies, cosmetics compounds or prophylactic procedures adapted to the industrial environment.
